Our Mission

Maine Citizens Action for Democracy (MECAD) is restoring a healthy democracy. We are a volunteer-led, nonpartisan coalition of interested Maine voters and like-minded organizations. MECAD is an incorporated non-profit in Maine.

David Kunhardt, Vice President (Scarborough) Middlebury College (Poli Sci) and George Washington Univ (Master of Urban and Regional Planning), SVP of Transamerica Realty, Founding Principal & CEO of SolEd Benefit Corp, volunteer at Citizens Climate Lobby and member of Piper Shores Board of Directors. President of the Board of Chocorua Lake Conservancy in Tamworth, NH. Sierra Club ME Clean Energy Team.

Chris Cundey, Treasurer (Scarborough) Dartmouth College (Economics); Commissioned in US Navy (LTCDR); Commercial Banking, Irving Trust Co.; Philips Electronics NA, VP & Treasurer and CEO Philips Credit Corp.; Chair, Finance Committee, New London Hospital Board of Directors.

Bob Warner, Secretary(Scarborough) Majored in Hotel Management. Joined Distinguished Hotels of the World representing 250 deluxe hotels worldwide providing reservations, advertising, PR, marketing and Hotel Management and rose to become CEO for 20 years, after selling business became CEO of Woodside Travel Management-world’s largest consortia of travel agents.

Carol Ford, (Falmouth) Colby College, B.A. affordable housing advocate and project manager in Mass. In Maine, Exec. Dir., & lobbyist for MEREDA, (R.E. Developers’ trade assoc.). Lobbyist for ME labor law firm & ME AFL-CIO. Founder, owner of Cranberry Island Kitchen, a Maine-branded specialty baking co. with national distribution. Volunteer: Amnesty International, Guardian Ad Litem for children in foster care, and licensed foster parent. Political campaigns, Maine Sierra Club. Board Member

DeCourcy MacIntosh, (Falmouth) Harvard University (Art History) and the Museum Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University, Former president of the Helen Clay Frick Foundation in Pittsburgh, PA. Board Member

Rod Wendt, (Scarborough) Purdue University BSME & MSIA, served in US Army including tour in Vietnam, started career in consumer marketing at Procter & Gamble and then co-founded Delta Consulting Group (Marketing). Volunteers with Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation as an adaptive ski instructor, Portland Wheelers and as a Piping Plover monitor. Board Member

Becky Gratwick, (Scarborough) Wellesley College (Art History), with a move to Portland, changed careers and worked as a tax accountant, became a CPA and earned a Master’s degree at Bentley College, in early 80’s became CFO of Portland Museum of Art then opened her own tax accounting firm. Shows her oil paintings at New Era Gallery Vinalhaven. 

Betsy Lawrence (Scarborough) Smith College (Economics), New York University - MBA, (Accounting), a career in both public and private accounting to include Controller at The Segal Company—an HR Consulting firm in NYC. Traces her Maine roots to the mid-1800’s original settlers of Perham in Aroostook County. MECAD Controller. 

Peg Metzger (Scarborough) Smith College and The George Washington University Law School, former Tufts Health Plan Sr. VP/General Counsel, former elected Town Moderator of Wellesley, MA for 8 terms after chairing town’s Advisory (Finance) Committee. 

Mary Winsky (Scarbrough) BA Manhattanville College, MS Western Connecticut State, Administrative Degree, Fordham University, taught AP English and mentored new teachers at Katonah-Lewisboro schools where she became writing, community relations, and staff development coordinator, K-12 and taught graduate students at Fairfield University and Teachers College, Columbia. 

Kathryn Yates (Scarborough) Penn State, HBS Advanced Management Program, VP Communication at Control Data and UNUM. Global Practice Managing Director at an international consulting firm. Recent Board Chair at Maine College of Art and Design and current Head of Governance Committee at ACLU of Maine.
